Walk On

The Story of Alaska's Recovery

Chapter 2: A Grey's Anatomy, or, Splurgin' on the Surgeon.
scared
not again
The news is not good. Despite the intensive physical therapy, my muscles were still atrophied, and worse yet, I was now unable to bear any weight on my poor little leg. With my usual good luck, not only had the surgical pins from the previous surgery moved from their original insertion points, but a massive infection had developed around them.
vets confer
news from vet
After reviewing my lack of progress and inability to walk, the vets determined that another $urgery was necessary. "We've got to go back in, little buddy," Doc said, "or you won't be able to walk." I argued that this was not necessary. If I couldn't walk, Terry would just carry me everywhere. No problem.

"Alaska," he answered, "that's just not practical. You weigh 65 pounds now, and Terry is exhausted as it is. Besides, that infection could kill you. No -- we're going in." It sounded far, far away, but I could hear soothing whispers saying, "Good widdle boy. Bwave gweyhound! Go sweepies now..." as I drifted off into the oblivion of anaethesia.
recovery room
I spent the night after the surgery in the hospital with a couple of other guys, ex-racers new to the SCG adoption program. They'd all been neutered that day and were pretty shaken up.
home again
roaching
I was released to go home with Terry the following morning. Post-surgical instructions were stringent, even harsh: no cookies for 12 hours. Here I am, writhing in pain, or maybe just having a nice nap on a comfy pillow.
incision stitches
The incision. Not to mention all that bare skin too, in the middle of winter. I hope Terry has a lot of Burt's Bees in the medicine cabinet.

Anyone have a gently used toupee I can use?
Separated at birth?
kylelindaMarci
If things weren't bad enough, Kyle, Marci, and Terry all suffered serious cranial injuries after banging their heads against the wall when they panicked over how the heck they were going to pay for all of this.
bono Past Due
SCG volunteer and rock star philanthropist Bono pitched in by organizing a "Rockin' for Alaska" World Tour, and raised $1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 for us... ...but it isn't enough to cover all the expenses. Fixing Alaska has put us in a fix.

couple growing money
Every day we pray for a miracle, but the hard fact is that we rely on the generosity of our faithful volunteers, supporters, and friends. Surely there is someone out there who can help.
We Appeal to You

Despite the humorous account of Alaska's saga, it has been a protracted and painful journey for this courageous little hound. He has been a champ through it all and has been fortunate that Terry, his human, has been willing and able to make the time commitment required for his post-surgical recovery.

Steel City Greyhounds is most grateful for the generous support of so many, but the medical expenses still exceed the donations by about $1,000. Any donation in any amount is welcome and appreciated!

Thanks for your concern and financial support!

We appeal to you, Dear Reader, for your support. Actually, by now we're way beyond just appealing -- we are downright BEGGING for your help.
Hard Luck

Will you do something to help this courageous little pup, who truly puts the "CAN" into "CANINE"?

Be a pal -- will you please make a donation towards Alaska's veterinary expenses? All help is deeply appreciated.
