Can you help me?

Production note: Please note that many of the dogs depicted below are stunt doubles. Mr Alaska is often not available for photo sessions due to his busy schedule of appearances at veterinary clinics. Some of the photos below are visual re-enactments to illustrate his story. The story is all true -- it just didn't look like this when it happened and maybe the events didn't happen precisely in this order.
My Story

It all started innocently enough. I was playing with my pals at the puppy farm... ...when, one day, hurrying to be the first at lunch, I made a 20 mph turn at 45 mph, smack into a large metal pole.

My poor little leg was broken in 3 places. If that wasn't bad enough, no one realized it for a month, which was going to cause serious problems later.

And how!

Marci and Kyle heard about me and brought me into the Steel City Greyhound adoption program. They would take care of my medical needs and find me a Forever Home with a special person.

When Kyle and Marci took me to the vet, she saw that the bones had calcified, because the injuries had not been treated when it first happened.

That's not good.

I had an operation to fix my little leg. The vet said I would have early-onset arthritis, and that I could never walk easily again

A lady with a big heart named Terry adopted me. She gave me daily Intensive Spoiling Therapy and regular applications of warm healing hugs.
But my leg was not getting better. I had to go to an orthopedic vet and find out what was going on.

Yikes!

Bad news. My poor little leg had been so badly fractured that it was not healing properly.

The pins had come loose because I was not taking it easy and using my crutches.

After the operation, I also felt very sick and listless.
The vet found out that I had a serious infection at the site of the surgery, which had to be treated immediately with intensive antibiotics.

It gets even worse.

The infection was a result of the trauma of the surgery when the pins were put it.

Worse still, there is a possibility that one of the pins is stuck in one of my joints, which is bad, bad news.

We won't know until the infection clears up, but I may be facing yet another surgery.

I stopped asking "What else could possibly go wrong?" a long time ago.

Sigh.

The veterinary bill...so far, mind you... was enough to make even Bill and Melinda Gates gasp.

And wait...the vet said there must be physical therapy too!!

What's a puppy to do?

Marci, Kyle and Terry agreed to the physical therapy I need and so we were off to yet another vet! It makes me tired, and I don't even do all the driving!

But the vet and my physical therapist bend my leg and give me nice massages.

Aaaaaaahhhhh....

My leg muscles have atrophied and I have to build them up again. Hydrotherapy will help. It works the muscles, but the weightlessness is less stressful.

(I'm embarrassed that I don't have a Speedo to wear in the tank.)

I've tasted the water and it tastes like swimming pool. Hey -- have you seen my towel? Where's my towel?

I also get physical therapy on a treadmill.

Kyle holds a cookie in front of my nose and I go and go and go.

All the hounds who come through the adoption program have a story to tell, but mine is one of the most challenging and expensive ever.

Steel City Greyhounds needs your help to help me pull through.

This holiday season, I am Steel City Greyhounds' little "Tiny Tim."

God bless us, every one.

I'm in high hopes of improving!

Love,
Alaska
